Honnavar has no beach-hut strip and no resort belt. What it has is a cluster of family-run homestays on the backwater side, near the Sharavathi bridge on NH66, and a smaller set of guesthouses down by Kasarkod Beach. Rooms are cheaper than Gokarna, and a night here splits the Gokarna–Murudeshwar drive neatly in half.
The Two Areas to Choose Between
Backwater side (near the Sharavathi bridge, NH66). This is where most of Honnavar's stays are — homestays and small guesthouses looking out over the estuary, within a few minutes of the jetty the 4:30 PM sunset cruise departs from. You are on the highway, so buses and shared autos are easy, and the Konkan Railway station is a short auto ride away.
Kasarkod Beach side (5 km south of town). A much smaller handful of beach-facing guesthouses and cottages on a long, casuarina-backed beach with almost no crowds. Quieter and more scenic, but you will want your own transport — there is little in the way of restaurants or shops once you are down there.
Best Areas by Traveller Type
Boating & cruise travellers
Backwater side, near the bridge. The Sharavathi cruise leaves the Honnavar jetty at 4:30 PM and kayaking trips start from the same stretch — staying here means you walk or take a five-minute auto instead of driving in.
Families
Riverside homestays. Most are working family homes with home-cooked fish thali included, ground-floor rooms and parking — the easiest option if you are travelling with children or parents.
Couples & quiet-seekers
Kasarkod. An empty beach, no hawkers and a sunset you will likely have to yourself. Carry snacks and plan dinner in town, or arrange it with your host in advance.
Overnight stops between Gokarna and Murudeshwar
Anything on the NH66 side of town. Honnavar is 53 km (1.5 hrs) from Gokarna and 56 km (1.5 hrs) from Murudeshwar, so you can drive down from Gokarna after lunch, do the evening cruise, and still reach Murudeshwar in time for morning darshan the next day.
What It Costs and When to Book
Honnavar is consistently cheaper than Gokarna for the same standard of room — it simply doesn't get Gokarna's volume, so rates hold steady even through the December–January peak. The exception is Ganesh Chaturthi, when Idagunji Ganapati temple (30 km away) fills every room in the area; book weeks ahead for those dates. Otherwise a few days' notice is usually enough outside December.
Practical Notes
Most homestays are self-contained houses rather than seasonal huts, so they stay open through the monsoon — but from June to September the Sharavathi runs high and fast and boat rides are regularly cancelled, so check before you commit to a monsoon trip. Carry cash: UPI works in town but not reliably at Kasarkod. Mosquito repellent is worth packing anywhere near the mangroves.
