The Aatma Linga story (in 60 seconds)
Ravana, the demon king, did intense penance and asked Lord Shiva for the Aatma Linga — the soul-essence of Shiva himself. Shiva agreed, but with one condition: the linga must never touch the ground before reaching Lanka.
The other gods, fearing Ravana's growing power, sent Lord Ganesha disguised as a young brahmin boy. He tricked Ravana into handing him the linga while Ravana performed his evening prayer — and promptly placed it on the ground at Gokarna. Ravana tried to lift it back, but it would not budge. Hence the name "Mahabala-Eshwara" — the Lord of Great Strength.
Darshan timings (2026)
- Mon – Sat: 6:00 AM – 12:30 PM, then 5:00 PM – 8:30 PM
- Sunday: 5:30 AM – 1:00 PM, then 4:30 PM – 9:00 PM
- Maha Shivaratri: open 24 hours with night abhisheka

Dress code (this is strict)
- Men: traditional dhoti only, no shirts inside the sanctum. Dhotis can be rented for ₹30 just outside the temple entrance.
- Women: saree or salwar kameez. Western clothing not permitted in the sanctum.
- Footwear, leather items, electronics and large bags must be deposited at the cloakroom (free).
Which pooja should I book?
- Rudrabhisheka (₹250): the classic — chanted abhisheka of the linga at 7:00 AM. Most powerful and most popular.
- Sankalpa pooja (₹150): a personal vow taken in your name, performed by a temple priest.
- Mahapooja (₹500): evening pooja with full alankara of the deity. Especially beautiful on Sundays.
- Anna-prasada (free): temple-prepared lunch served between 12:30 – 1:30 PM. First come first served.
Book pooja at the temple office on arrival, or use any registered Tripskar guide who can pre-book it.
How to skip the queue
Two practical tips: arrive at 5:45 AM for the temple opening — you'll be in and out in 30 minutes. Or visit between 5:30 PM and 6:30 PM on a weekday — the late-evening crowd is much lighter than mornings.
